In Chinese medical theory, migraines have a number of different causes. The most common pattern seen in patients is liver qi stagnation. This means that the energy of the liver has become stuck and hyperactive, often due to pent-up anger, ongoing stress, or a chronic inability to express one’s emotions. Liver-pattern headaches tend to run along the temples, as the gallbladder meridian—which is closely connected with the liver—travels through this area.
Another common cause of migraines is kidney deficiency or adrenal fatigue. This pattern is often related to being overworked, excessive willpower, and misuse of one’s ambition. When this pattern is predominant, migraines tend to occur during periods of rest. Often, a person will push hard and run on adrenaline during the week, then collapse on the weekends and develop a migraine. The urinary bladder channel, which is closely associated with the kidney channel, runs along the nape of the neck and is a primary origin of migraines related to kidney deficiency.
Acupuncture is a powerful treatment option for migraines. A typical course of treatment in our practice is once a week for 6–8 visits, at which time we assess next steps. Acupuncture is a deeply relaxing experience that optimizes overall health and has no side effects.
For the most effective treatment, Chinese herbs are typically used in conjunction with acupuncture. We regularly prescribe several different formulas in the treatment of migraines, addressing symptoms such as headaches due to the onset of a cold, ongoing stress, adrenal fatigue, menstrual migraines, blood deficiency headaches, and general neck pain requiring strong anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic support.
Other Treatment Options
For most migraine sufferers, reducing stress is crucial for healing. Meditation and yoga are very helpful practices in this regard, as they restore circulation through movement and deep breathing. Many people with chronic pain have been able to heal their symptoms using these techniques alone.
Dietary Considerations:
Eliminate caffeine and alcohol for 2 months
Drink at least 8 glasses of filtered water daily, as dehydration is often a key factor for chronic headache sufferers
Avoid sugars and refined carbohydrates, which promote inflammation
Eat plenty of organic fruits and vegetables
Eliminate trigger foods such as coffee, chocolate, avocado, and peanuts for a period of time
With the right combination of treatments and a strong commitment to improved health, most patients respond very well to Chinese medical treatment for migraines.
